| Obverse description | Central field occupied by an elaborate Carolingian monogram of KAROLVS, formed by the interlaced letters K, A, R, O, L, V, and S disposed around a central pellet, the whole enclosed within a plain inner circle. The monogram is rendered in the angular, interlaced style characteristic of the Edict of Pîtres coinage reform of 864. The field between the inner circle and the outer beaded border is populated by the circumferential legend, with the entire design reflecting the Carolingian royal authority as reformulated under Charles II the Bald. |

| Reverse description | Central field bearing a plain cross pattée extending to the inner beaded circle, dividing the enclosed area into four equal quarters, all plain without additional symbols. The cross is boldly struck in the characteristic Carolingian hammered style. Surrounding the inner beaded circle, the mint legend is disposed in the outer annular field, identifying the Laon mint, and the entire design is contained within a beaded outer border typical of the post-864 reform coinage of Charles II the Bald. |
