Charles II — Charles the Bald — received the western Frankish territories through the Treaty of Verdun in 843, the agreement that fractured Charlemagne's empire among three grandsons. Laon was among the most politically significant minting sites in his kingdom: a fortified hilltop city that served as a favored royal residence and administrative center throughout his reign. The denier issue from this mint falls within the pre-864 monetary reform, after which Charles imposed stricter controls on coinage production, consolidating output and suppressing the proliferation of local ecclesiastical and comital issues.
