Obverse description A plain cross occupies the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The cross arms extend nearly to the inner circle, rendered in the bold, somewhat crude style characteristic of Carolingian hammered coinage. A Latin legend reading CARLVS REX F (Charles, King of the Franks) encircles the beaded border, separated by a cross pattée at the legend's commencement. The lettering, struck in capital Carolingian majuscules, fills the outer field between the beaded circle and the coin's irregular rim.
