| Obverse description | Central design features a plain cross with four pellets in the angles, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding field bears a circular Latin legend reading CARLVS REX, with additional cross pattée and star-like ornaments interspersed between the letters in the outer margin. The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the edges, characteristic of Carolingian hammered silver coinage. The overall fabric is typical of ninth-century West Frankish mint production, with bold if somewhat crude relief. |

| Reverse description | Central motif consists of a stylised temple or church facade rendered in linear form — a rectangular structure with a pitched roof and a small quadruped figure (likely a bull or ox) depicted within the central arcade, an allusion to the episcopal city of Chartres. The device is framed by a square border and flanked by abbreviated letters of the mint legend in the surrounding field. The outer legend, separated by pellets and cross ornaments, reads CARNOTIS, identifying the Chartres mint. The flan is irregular with uneven striking pressure, consistent with hand-hammered Carolingian technique. |
