Reverse description A stylised temple or church facade is depicted in the central field, rendered with four columns supporting a triangular pediment or roof element, with a small crosslet at the apex and a crosslet at the centre between the columns. The mint legend CARNOTIS CIVITAS, denoting the city of Chartres, surrounds the design, preceded by a cross pattée. The architectural motif follows the standard Carolingian temple type established under the monetary reform of Louis the Pious, rendered in the robust, somewhat schematic style characteristic of provincial Carolingian dies.
