Obverse description Carolingian royal monogram of Charles (Karolus) occupying the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The monogram is composed of interlaced letters in the characteristic Carolingian fashion, with a cross element at its centre. A circular Latin legend surrounds the beaded border, preceded by a cross pattée. The flan is irregular and slightly convex, typical of ninth-century hammered silver coinage.
