Obverse lettering ✠ GRΛTIΛ D-I REX
(Translation: Charles, king by God`s grace.)
Reverse description Central field displays a plain Greek cross with expanded terminals, set within a beaded inner circle that separates it from the outer marginal legend. The cross occupies the full width of the inner die, rendered in high relief against a flat field. The surrounding legend, introduced by a cross pattee, reads BΛVΛCΛ CIVITΛS, identifying the mint city of Bavay. Lettering is in rustic Carolingian capitals consistent with the obverse. The flan edges are irregular, reflecting the hammered production technique standard at Carolingian provincial mints.
