| Obverse description | Central field features the Carolingian royal monogram of Charles II, composed of interlaced letters within a plain inner circle, executed in bold relief typical of the Edict of Pîtres coinage reform of 864. The monogram is surrounded by a beaded or rope inner border, with the circular legend disposed around the periphery of the flan. The hammered flan is irregular in outline, with characteristic uneven surfaces and die wear consistent with ninth-century Frankish minting practice. The design reflects the standardized Palace type introduced under Charles the Bald. |
