| 正面描述 | A plain cross with equal arms occupies the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend reads CΛRLVS IMPR, identifying the issuer as Charles, emperor, and is introduced by a cross pattée. The flan is irregular and slightly cupped, typical of Carolingian hammered coinage, with the legend partially weak at the edges due to uneven striking. |

Charles II — "the Bald" — was crowned Holy Roman Emperor by Pope John VIII in Rome on December 25, 875, following the death of his brother Louis II without a male heir. The imperial title changed his coinage program almost immediately. Toulouse, an important administrative and commercial center in the Carolingian south, produced this denier under that brief imperial tenure, which ended with Charles's death in October 877 while crossing the Mont Cenis pass on his retreat from Italy.
