Obverse description A plain cross with equal arms occupies the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend, reading clockwise and introduced by a cross pattée, is struck in capital letters against a flat field. The lettering is characteristic of Carolingian hammered coinage, with lunate forms for certain letters. The overall composition follows the standard imperial denier type established under Charles the Bald.
