Reverse description At centre, a plain upright cross with slightly flared terminals occupies the inner field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The cross extends nearly to the inner beaded border, dividing the central area into four equal quadrants. The surrounding outer legend reads ✠ LENNIS FISCO, identifying the fiscal mint of Lens, a royal fisc in the Artois region. The lettering is boldly struck in capital Roman characters, distributed evenly around the circumference in the manner typical of Carolingian fiscal deniers. The flan is irregular in outline, consistent with hand-hammered production of the period.
