| Reverse description | Central field displays a bold, plain Greek cross with equal arms extending to a beaded inner circle, dividing the field into four quadrants — a standard Carolingian reverse type established by the Edict of Pîtres (864). The cross is rendered in high relief with clean, straight arms terminating at the inner beaded border. The surrounding legend, ANDEGAVIS CIVITAS, introduced by a cross pattée, identifies the issuing city of Angers in the Latin civic tradition. The lettering is executed in large, somewhat irregular Carolingian majuscules, occupying the annular field between the inner beaded circle and the outer rim. The flan edges are uneven, characteristic of hand-struck silver deniers of the ninth century. |
