Charles I of Anjou struck these deniers during the period between his receipt of the county from his brother Louis IX in 1246 and his departure to claim the Kingdom of Sicily following papal investiture in 1266. The Sicilian campaign, financed partly through aggressive taxation of Anjou and Provence, almost certainly disrupted normal coin production as resources were redirected southward toward one of the most expensive military ventures of the thirteenth century.
Billon quality in Angevin issues of this period varied considerably depending on available silver supplies and political pressure to debase.
