Obverse description The obverse displays the royal monogram of Charlemagne (KAROLVS) arranged in a bold, interlaced cruciform pattern that dominates the entire coin field. The letters C, A, R, O, L, V, and S are skillfully interwoven in a large central composition characteristic of early Carolingian coinage. The monogram is executed in high relief with angular, deeply cut strokes typical of the hammered silver deniers of this period. The design fills the flan edge to edge, with the irregular coin border visible around the circumference. No peripheral legend is present on this type; the royal name itself constitutes the sole design element.
