Obverse description The obverse displays the royal name CAROLVS arranged in two lines across the field in bold Carolingian majuscule lettering, with the syllables CARO on the upper line and LVS on the lower. Individual letters are separated and punctuated by pellets disposed symmetrically within the field. The flan is irregular and slightly scalloped at the edge, consistent with hand-struck hammered coinage of the early Carolingian period. The entire composition is set within a plain inner circle bordered by a beaded outer ring.
