| Obverse description | Central field occupied by the royal monogram of Charlemagne, formed by the interlaced letters C, A, R, O, L, V, S arranged in a bold, stylised cross-like cipher typical of early Carolingian coinage. The monogram is executed in large, deeply struck characters that dominate the flan, with the letters reading CAROLUS in abbreviated form. The entire design is enclosed within a plain inner circle bordered by a beaded outer rim. The flan is irregularly shaped and the strike is slightly off-centre, consistent with hand-hammered production of the period. No effigy is present; the monogram serves as the sole identifying device of the issuing ruler. |

| Reverse description | Central field features a cross pattée, its arms extending nearly to the inner circle and dividing the field into four quarters. A pellet or small annulet is placed at the centre of the cross. The surrounding legend, disposed in the four quadrants and reading around the cross, identifies the mint church of Reims dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The inscription is preceded by a cross pommée at the commencement of the legend. A beaded border frames the entire reverse, consistent with the workshop style of the Reims mint under Charlemagne. The strike displays characteristic irregularities of eighth-century hammered silver coinage. |
