| Beschrijving keerzijde | Two-line Latin inscription divided by a horizontal bar, reading SCE / MRE (abbreviation for Sanctae Mariae, i.e. Saint Mary), referring to the church of Saint Mary at Laon. The letters are boldly rendered in the field in a large, stylized uncial hand. A beaded border encircles the entire design. The horizontal dividing bar separating the two lines of text is a hallmark of this ecclesiastical denier type. The overall layout and epigraphy are consistent with Carolingian ecclesiastical mint issues of the late eighth century. |
