Obverse description Central field occupied by a bold monogram composed of the letters C, A, R, L, V, and S arranged in an interlaced design, reading CARLVS — the Latin form of the name Charlemagne. The monogram is rendered in a characteristic Carolingian style with interlinked capital letterforms. The entire design is set within a plain linear border, without a surrounding inscription. The flan is irregular in shape, typical of hand-struck hammered coinage of the period.
