Obverse description Central field dominated by a bold Carolingian monogram composed of the interlaced letters C, A, R, O, L, and V, forming the royal cipher of Charlemagne (CAROLUS). The monogram is rendered in high relief in a characteristic early Carolingian hammered style, with the letters tightly interwoven in a cruciform arrangement. The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the edges, typical of early medieval hammered coinage. No surrounding legend is present on this side, the monogram itself serving as the principal identifier of the issuing authority.
