| 背面描述 | The reverse displays the Carolingian royal monogram at centre, a complex interlaced cipher composed of the letters of KAROLVS elegantly intertwined within an oval beaded border, a device introduced under Charlemagne as a symbol of royal authority on the reformed coinage of 793. Eight wedge-shaped triangular elements radiate outward from the beaded inner circle into the surrounding field, creating a spoke-like ornamental arrangement. The outer legend, commencing with a cross pattée, reads ✠ SCA MARIA, a dedication to the Virgin Mary referencing the cathedral church of Laon under whose patronage this mint operated. The flan is irregular in outline, as is typical of hand-struck Carolingian silver, and the die is somewhat off-centre, partially truncating the legend. |
