Obverse description The obverse presents the mint name and royal title arranged in two concentric epigraphic registers separated by a beaded inner circle. The central field contains a stylised cross pattée with a small annulet at its centre, the four arms terminating in expanded, wedge-shaped finials and radiating outward in a wheel-like composition typical of Carolingian hammered coinage. The outer legend, read continuously around the irregular flan, bears the Latin inscription LADVNO CARLVS REX FR, identifying the mint of Laon and proclaiming Charles as King of the Franks. A cross pattée serves as the initial mark preceding the legend. The overall design is executed in a bold, somewhat primitive relief characteristic of late eighth- to early ninth-century Frankish monetary production.
