The circular legend SCI MARTINI, preceded by a cross pommée, reads around the coin referencing Saint Martin, patron of the Abbey of Tours. The lettering is bold and slightly irregular, consistent with the hand-cut dies typical of early Carolingian workshop production. A beaded border encircles the design along the rim. The reverse type firmly identifies the issuing authority as the Abbey of Saint Martin at Tours, one of the most important ecclesiastical mints of the Carolingian period. |
