Obverse description Central field occupied by the Carolingian royal monogram of Charlemagne, composed of interlaced letters forming the name KARLVS in an elaborate ligature, enclosed within a plain inner circle. The monogram is rendered in the characteristic Carolingian style, with angular strokes typical of hammered coinage of the reform period. A beaded or dotted inner circle separates the central device from the surrounding marginal legend. The circumferential legend, reading in Latin, runs between the inner circle and the coin's irregular outer edge.
