| Obverse description | The royal name CAROLVS is displayed in two lines across the field, reading CARO on the upper line and LVS on the lower, rendered in bold, angular Carolingian capital letters characteristic of the early reform coinage. A small cross or pellet device occupies the central interspace between the two lines of lettering. The entire inscription is contained within a beaded circle border, itself set within the irregular flan typical of hammered Frankish silver coinage of this period. |
