Reverse description The mint name MEDOLVS is arranged in a circular pattern around a central sunburst or rosette motif, with the boldly struck Latin letters radiating outward from the central device in a distinctive Carolingian layout. The letters are rendered in thick, slightly irregular strokes consistent with hand-engraved dies of the late 8th century. An alternative spelling METOLO is also documented for this mint legend. The reverse field is plain and the coin is struck on an irregular flan with a beaded or plain rim typical of early Carolingian deniers.
