| Obverse description | Draped and laureate bust of Charlemagne facing right, rendered in a schematic Carolingian style characteristic of the late imperial portrait deniers. The emperor's laurel wreath and drapery folds are summarily but recognizably rendered in low relief. A circular Latin legend surrounds the effigy, reading clockwise from upper right, with a cross pattée as initial mark. The flan is irregularly shaped and slightly clipped at the rim, typical of hammered medieval coinage of this period. |

| Reverse description | Schematic representation of a city gate — the distinctive type of the Arles mint — depicted frontally with a central arched portal flanked by two towers, each surmounted by a small turret or finial, rendered in the flat, stylized manner typical of Carolingian hammered silver. The architectural motif references the Roman city gates of Arles. A circular Latin legend surrounding the central design gives the abbreviated mint name. The flan exhibits the irregular planchet shape and surface texture characteristic of ninth-century hammered deniers. |
