Obverse description A plain cross with equal arms occupies the center of the field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding annular legend reads the royal title in Carolingian minuscule-influenced capital letters, separated by a cross pattée at the commencement. The flan is irregular in outline, consistent with hand-struck hammered coinage of the late ninth century, and the relief is bold though unevenly distributed across the surface.
