| Obverse description | Central field dominated by a plain Latin cross with splayed arms, enclosed within an inner beaded circle. The surrounding legend reads CΛRLOMAN REX, introduced by a cross pattée, all contained between the inner beaded circle and an outer beaded border. The lettering is executed in the Carolingian epigraphic style typical of ninth-century West Frankish royal coinage, with the retrograde or irregular letter forms characteristic of hammered dies of this period. The flan is irregularly shaped, as is standard for hand-struck medieval deniers. |
