| Obverse description | Central field occupied by a large letter B enclosed within a beaded inner circle, rendered in crude hammered relief characteristic of late 11th-century episcopal coinage. The surrounding legend reads B BASSILEA, referencing the bishopric of Basel, disposed around the inner circle. The flan is irregular and slightly cupped, as typical of hand-struck medieval deniers of the period. The overall design is bold yet roughly executed, reflecting the workshop conditions of Rhenish episcopal mints of the era. |
