| Obverse description | Central field bearing an escutcheon charged with a rampant lion to the left, upon which a crozier is superimposed diagonally, referencing the episcopal authority of the issuer. The legend, reading BOVCAR DVS (Burchard), is distributed in three segments around the shield within the coin's periphery, consistent with the irregular hammered fabric typical of 13th-century episcopal deniers. |

Burchard of Avesnes held the see of Metz from 1282 until his death in 1296, a tenure marked by persistent conflict with the city's bourgeoisie, who had been pressing for communal independence since the mid-thirteenth century. His coinage from Marsal — a fortified salt-producing town on the Seille river — reflects the bishop's determination to assert temporal authority over his scattered territorial holdings even as his grip on Metz itself was contested. Marsal's salt revenues made it worth defending administratively, and the mint there gave Burchard a monetary foothold outside the capital.
