Obverse description Central field displays the interlaced Carolingian monogram of Archbishop Burchard II, rendered in bold relief within a beaded inner circle. The monogram comprises intertwined letters forming a characteristic early medieval cipher. A circular Latin legend reading LVCDVNVS surrounds the beaded border, identifying the mint city of Lyon. The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the edges, typical of hand-struck hammered coinage of the late 10th century.
