Bruno of Lauffen was appointed Archbishop of Trier in 1102 through the direct intervention of Emperor Henry V, making his tenure inseparable from the Investiture Controversy still tearing through the German church. His ecclesiastical authority over Trier — one of the oldest Christian sees north of the Alps — gave him the right to strike coinage, a privilege the archbishops had held since the Carolingian period. Denier production under Bruno falls within a transitional moment for Rhenish episcopal coinage, as minting practices began shifting away from older Ottonian conventions.
