Obverse description Frontal enthroned figure of Saint Maurice, nimbed and shown in half-length or seated posture, holding a patriarchal cross in his right hand and a palm branch in his left, flanked on either side by sinuous foliate or serpentine stems rising from the base. The saint is depicted in a hieratic Romanesque style with architectural elements suggesting a throne or fortified seat beneath him. The surrounding legend reads SC-S MAV-RICIVS, identifying the patron saint of Magdeburg. The overall composition is characteristic of high medieval German bracteate coinage, with fine relief detail pressed through a single thin flan.
