Additional information

Werner of Eppstein held the archbishopric of Mainz from 1259 until his death in 1284, and his alliance with Henry I of Hesse was politically calculated — Henry had been a consistent supporter of Werner's ambitions against rival territorial lords along the Rhine and Lahn corridors. Joint coinage of this kind, issued under episcopal authority but acknowledging a secular co-issuer, reflects the practical entanglements of mid-13th-century German ecclesiastical politics rather than any formal monetary union.

Bracteates from Mainz in this period are notoriously fragile. Single-sided striking on thin silver blanks means edge cracks and slight dish distortion are the norm, not damage.
