Wenceslaus I ruled Bohemia during a period of intense German colonization, actively recruiting settlers from the Holy Roman Empire and reshaping the kingdom's economic infrastructure in the process. Bracteate coinage — struck on a single thin flan so that the design appears in relief on one side and incuse on the other — was the dominant Bohemian monetary form throughout the 13th century, a regional preference that set it apart from the double-sided pfennig tradition prevailing further west.
