Obverse description Full-length frontal effigy of Margrave Otto I standing en face, clad in armour, holding a banner-topped spear in his right hand and a large kite-shaped shield in his left, with a sword at his side. The figure is flanked on each side by a stylised Romanesque tower with a domed roof surmounting a multi-arched base, representing the fortified towns of the margraviate. A circular beaded inner border frames the composition, with the remnants of a Latin legend running in the outer annulus. The design is executed in the bold, high-relief style characteristic of late 12th-century North German bracteate coinage.
