Ludolf of Kroppenstedt served as Archbishop of Magdeburg from 1192 until his death in 1205, a period during which the archbishopric was deeply entangled in the political turbulence following the death of Emperor Henry VI and the ensuing Hohenstaufen succession crisis. Magdeburg's mint was among the most prolific producers of bracteates in the Saxon region, and Ludolf's tenure coincides with the peak of that thin-flan tradition in the northern German ecclesiastical mints.
Berger 1543 is a scarce type within his issues.
