Louis II ruled Upper Bavaria during a period when bracteate production in the German duchies was already in decline, gradually being displaced by thicker, two-sided pfennig coinage. His reign saw the formal partition of the Wittelsbach holdings following the 1255 division between Upper and Lower Bavaria, and coins issued under his authority reflect that fractured political geography — separate issues, separate minting rights, despite the same dynastic house.
Berger 2688 is among the more reliably attributed bracteates of the series. The Steinheimer and Bonhoff concordances align on this type without significant dispute.
