Hermann II served as Landgrave of Thuringia during one of the most turbulent successions in the region's medieval history, inheriting a disputed claim and ruling through a period of chronic instability that included the Ludowingian dynasty's gradual collapse. He died in 1241 without a male heir, triggering the Thuringian War of Succession that effectively ended the landgraviate as an independent political entity. Bracteates of this reign are characteristically thin and fragile — a deliberate consequence of single-die striking — and survivors without cracking or peripheral loss are genuinely uncommon.
