Hermann II ruled Thuringia as a minor under regency for most of this period, having inherited the landgraviate as a child following his father Ludwig IV's death on crusade in 1227. The thin, single-sided fabric of bracteate coinage made it particularly vulnerable to clipping and wear, which is precisely why so few survive without distortion — the silver is barely substantial enough to hold a strike under normal handling pressure.
