Hohnstein was a minor Thuringian county whose counts held minting rights largely through proximity to more powerful neighbors rather than any significant economic base of their own. The bracteate fabric — a single-faced strike on a thin flan — was the dominant small-change technology across central Germany for roughly two centuries, and Hohnstein's output fits squarely within that regional tradition without distinguishing itself politically or monetarily.
