Additional information

Henry III of Virneburg's tenure as Archbishop of Mainz was defined less by ecclesiastical administration than by his persistent entanglement in the political warfare between Ludwig IV of Bavaria and the Avignon papacy. Mainz was formally placed under interdict during this period, a circumstance that makes the continued minting of these bracteates a quiet assertion of temporal authority when spiritual authority was effectively suspended.

At 0.35g, these are among the most delicate bracteates produced by the Mainz mint — the thin single-sided fabric prone to cracking, which accounts for the difficulty in finding intact examples today.
