Henry the Lion had already died by 1195, making this issue the product of his son, Henry of Brunswick, striking in his father's name or memory during a period when the Welf dynasty was clawing back influence after imperial exile. Bracteates of this weight class were punishingly fragile in circulation — struck on a single thin flan, they dished, cracked, and folded under normal handling, which is precisely why intact survivors command attention. Berger 464 represents a well-documented die grouping within this series, cross-referenced across Fiala and Bonhoff with minor positional variants recorded.
