Hartwig II of Hirnheim held the Augsburg see during a period of intense conflict between the Staufen emperors and the papacy, and his coinage reflects the fragmented minting authority that characterized German episcopal issues of the early thirteenth century. Bracteates of this type were struck on thin, single-sided flans — a technique widespread in northern and central Germany that never fully penetrated Bavarian episcopal minting until political pressure made lighter coinage economically convenient.
Steinhardt 69 is among the scarcer documented Augsburg bracteate attributions from this episcopate.
