正面描述 Half-length frontal effigy of a bishop emerging above an arched wall or gateway, rendered in the Romanesque style characteristic of 13th-century South German bracteates. The bishop raises his right hand in benediction while holding a crozier in his left hand. The mitered head is depicted frontally with schematic facial features. Nine raised lobes or arches form a decorative border on the outer rim of the thin silver flan, framing the central episcopal figure within the field.

附加信息

Hartmann of Dillingen served as Bishop of Augsburg from 1248 until his death in 1286, a tenure marked by persistent jurisdictional conflict with the city's burghers, who were steadily pushing toward the municipal autonomy they would achieve in the following century. Bracteates of this type — struck on a single thin flan so that the design shows in reverse on the opposite face — were the characteristic small change of southern German ecclesiastical mints in this period, and Augsburg produced them in quantity to serve local market transactions under episcopal monetary authority.

Steinhauser 79 is among the better-documented varieties of Hartmann's issues, though the 36-year emission window makes precise attribution within his reign difficult without die analysis.
