Gero of Schermke served as Bishop of Halberstadt from 1160 until his death in 1177, a tenure spent largely navigating the rivalry between Henry the Lion and Frederick Barbarossa — a conflict that put Saxon ecclesiastical lords in an impossible position of competing loyalties. Halberstadt's bracteate production during this period reflects that instability: thin, fragile, and struck on broad flans that were never intended for prolonged hand-to-hand exchange but rather for regional transactions within a tightly controlled ecclesiastical economy.
The Freckleben hoard reference places this type among finds from the Mansfeld region, suggesting a circulation radius that rarely strayed far from the diocese itself.
