At center, a large crowned royal head faces forward, the crown surmounted by a cross pattée, the face rendered with schematic three-dot facial features typical of Hohenstaufen-era bracteate coinage. To the left, a rampant lion with its head turned backward in profile occupies the field, its body rendered in the stylized manner characteristic of 13th-century South German die-cutting. The composition is contained within a raised inner ring, the whole presenting the characteristic shallow single-sided relief of bracteate manufacture. |
