Engelhardt II served as Bishop of Naumburg from 1206 to 1242, a tenure that coincided with intense competition between imperial and papal factions across the Saxon dioceses. Naumburg's bracteate coinage operated within a regional penny system that periodically required mass demonetization — old issues were called in and reminted, a forced exchange that generated seigniorage revenue for the issuing authority. This cycle kept most bracteates in circulation briefly, which is precisely why surviving examples in fine condition are uncommon.
The Löbbecke reference places this piece within a carefully documented nineteenth-century collection that remains a primary attribution source for Thuringian and Saxon bracteates.
