Eberhard II served as Bishop of Constance from 1248 to 1274, a period when the bracteate — struck on a single thin flan so that the design punches through as a mirror image on the reverse — was the dominant small denomination across much of the German-speaking interior. The Bishopric of Constance was the largest diocese in the Holy Roman Empire by geographic extent, stretching from Alsace to the Tyrol, which made episcopal coinage politically significant well beyond its face value.
The Waldburg-Thann attribution identifies Eberhard's comital family origins before his elevation to the episcopate.
