Conrad II of Tegerfelden served as Bishop of Constance from 1209 to 1233, a tenure that coincided with the peak of bracteate production in the upper Rhine region. These thin, single-sided strikes were produced by a diocese whose monetary authority extended across a politically fractured stretch of Swabia, where imperial oversight was effectively absent during the prolonged conflict between the Hohenstaufen and the Papacy. The striking technique — a single die pressed against a yielding substrate — demanded exceptional die craftsmanship to compensate for the fragility of the resulting fabric.
